The Cross

We turned  against You when You talked of truth,
We turned  against You when You talked of love.
You carried our pain to Calvary.
                   We denied our shame,
                   Refused the blame,
And, yet, You still loved us all the same.
We turned  against You when You tried to teach us,
We would not listen; You could not reach us.
You carried our pain to Calvary.
                   But we lost our way,
                   Refused to pray,
Closed our ears to the words You came to say.
We turned  against You in Your hour of need,
An innocent victim of cold, human weed.
You carried our pain to Calvary.
                   You stumbled and fell,
                   On roads we knew well,
Leaving Your message for others to tell.
We turned  against you because we lived by man’s law,
Our fear and our pride were all that You saw.
You carried our pain to Calvary.
                   Where was God’s mercy –
                   We wanted to see:
Was this really the Son that He promised to be?
We turned  against You because we refused to believe,
Accepting only things we could see.
You carried our pain to Calvary.
                   Your blood on our hands,
                   The price of God’s plan,
Ensuring that evil our souls could withstand.
                   We turned  against you, a stranger to sin;
A lamb to the slaughter, for this war Good must win.
You carried our pain to Calvary.
                   Nailed up to a cross,
                   The battle not lost;
Your suffering imprinted on our hearts was man’s cost.
We turn  against You by forgetting Your pain,
Forgetting Your love is a constant, unchanged.
You carried our sin to Calvary.
                   Turn away from the light,
                   And do wrong, not right,
Ignore your conscience and of Heaven lose sight
We turn  against you when we are angry with life,
When it causes our struggles, giving us strife.
You carried our sin to Calvary.
                   We must understand,
                   God’s mercy is at hand,
To save us from death is all that He planned.
We turn  against you by refusing to believe,
To know that You are living in all Good things we see.
You carried our sin to Calvary.
                   God offered His Son,
                   To show us the way,
To erase our pain and take darkness away.
                   The Son of God bore the weight of man’s sin;
His suffering reflected the state we were in.
But Love Absolute, we nailed to a cross.
                   For God gave His Son,
To show in death there is life
And the war against evil, only His love can win.
