Priceless Love

Satan sought to scourge You hard
So this would be Your end
He vainly tried to take Your life
Before the Crown of Thorns.

He did not want the wooden Cross
For You would then be seen –
An innocent man, all-powerful God,
Crushed by the weight of our sin.

You walked the road to Calvary
You carried the crushing weight
You were nailed upon the rough-hewn wood
Raised up to draw us close.

You fell on to the stony ground
Dear Veronica wiped Your face
Your blood-stained image forever caught
On an offering of priceless cloth.

Again You fell, a tortured frame,
But kind men lifted You high
Angels were there, unseen, unheard
Whilst Heaven sighed and wept.

You looked into Your Mother’s eyes
You saw her heart-pierced wounds
We all now feel her sorrow, her pain
The beastly Battle, the Devil’s doom.

Evil wanted Your quick demise
He hated the mournful cries
The shocking crime of Jesus’s death
But where Truth overcame all lies.

The amazing journey to Golgotha
The outrageous scheme of fools
Men fed by lies and hate and pride
For Satan’s desperate plan!

You, Son of God, the Innocent, Holy One
Were crushed to death by us.
Scourged by our sin
Crowned with razor-sharp lies
You struggled to that shameful Hill
Where thieves met Mercy and Love.

Satan tried to steal the fight
But he was chained by pride
Your broke our chains
You purchased life
You crowned us with pure love.
You made us rich, beyond all measure -
Your suffering now our blessed treasure.
We cry out now with Calgary’s stones in joy
Bless You, our Saviour,
Bless You, our King!
