Grass

Blade of grass
Supreme in sunlight
Standing tall, standing firm
Revived by heaven’s rain

Swaying gently in the breeze
Capturing the passing wind
Moving to and fro
Solid, flexible, resistant, strong

Stamped on, crushed
Squashed and pushed flat
Surviving all assaults
Springing back to life, with joy

Deep green, innocent blade
Absorbing all God’s goodness
One among millions, perfect
Sharing in nature’s bounty

Growing tall, reaching up
Then suddenly cut short
But with strong roots,
Pushes forth again in strength

One blade sharply soft
A Ladybird’s instant delight
As it scales the mighty height
Of a single pillar of green

Viewing the horizon, brave reconnaissance
Seeing how the land lies
Leaping on to another blade
Bounding, playing, searching, finding

Amazing shaft of green
Simple and yet so strong
Source of goodness and of health
Lowest of the low, providing the best

Touch and feel its textured skin
Smooth though rough, its finery
Laying out its priceless carpet
Dressing the earth, knowing its worth

Oh, how we neglect your beauty
So humble, so constant, so rich!
Rolling hills, meadows and mountain tops
Straw and hay, from summer’s yield

Ready to start again
Obedient and constant
Still swaying in the breeze
Steady in the winds of change

Sun-dried, hail-struck,
Snow-covered and rain-soaked
Ice-frozen, frost-laden,
Wind-bent and dew-drenched

Let not the grass grow under your feet
Enjoy the pasture green
Run and dance and jump and sit
By golden sun and moonlight lit
