I close my eyes and search inside
I seek my God, Who in there resides
Deep in my heart, I hold Him close
I hear no sound, but silence speaks…
Darkness allows His light to grow
Flickering beams come out to show
Heaven’s radiance, bright; Earth’s bleakness below.
He surely looks upon the burning fires
The war-torn lands, the empty hands
The famines and droughts,
The skyscrapers high, where cities span
For miles and miles,
As endless trails, of cars and people,
Queue for peace, for shelter, for hope
As starvation and thirst drive the sore-footed on
Where ragged waifs live in ragged, torn tents
There’s no end to trouble away from the rich
Whose houses so grand are built on sand
In amazing places, on amazing lands.
The Amazon forests so green, could once be seen
But are now peppered with browns and frowning gaps
As thoughtless folk fell and destroy all life
Seeking personal gain and no value given
To the natives’ pain, whose indigenous rights
Are blighted, wiped-out for the animal-man
Who puts his head in the sand of sin
Which has no strength and can never stand.
Are we bent on destruction? So, what can we do
Whilst we travel in chaos and walk in the dark?
God’s light can be found if with truth we stand firm -
When we fight for true justice and treat our neighbour with love
When we offer to help the poor man, woman and child
When we forget to be king, expecting the best
When we judge wrongly each other and refuse to forgive
When we think sin will win so the devil we let in
To our lives and our hearts, our minds and our plans
God can see deep inside our spirits, souls and lies
As we devise a true hell, hell-bent on ourselves.
Hold your hands up in surrender to the One True God Who can save
He is waiting for us with arms of mercy, open wide
If we can but be sorry for all we’ve done wrong
And with true hearts of love, can welcome Him in.
‘Turn to me now, while there is still time. Give Me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping and mourning.’ Joel 2:12
